Question: Do you offer free trial classes?
Answer: Yes! You may try free classes for 1
week to see if our style of karate is right for you. All that we ask is that you
wear a plain white t-shirt and sweatpants (no logos or designs please) and bring
a bottle of water. Of course please contact us prior to coming so that we can
outline what you can expect during your training.
Question: Do you have a beginners class?
Answer: Yes-for children only. In the adults class,
all students in
all belts levels train together. When you are just beginning you will receive
help from a senior student who will help you along with your training.
Question: Why are there different colored belts?
Answer: Colored belts signify an individuals'
progress and stage in their martial arts training. A new beginner would wear a
white belt and after a period of time would be invited by Sensei
Nakamura to grade to the next level. (click

Question: Do I have to be in shape to do karate?
Answer: No. However karate is a great
way to get in shape while learning a traditional martial art at the same time!
However we strongly recommend prior embarking on any fitness regime that you
consult your doctor prior to training. Remember, anyone at any age can
practice karate; whether you are 6 or 60, karate does not discriminate anyone
due to their age.
Question: I'm interested in fighting only. How often do we
spar?
Answer: Although we do spar occasionally in
class, beginners are not allowed to spar until they achieve the rank of 8th kyu
(orange belt) due in inexperience. However if you are looking to spar only and
not learn the basics of karate then our dojo may not be for you.
Question: Will I get hurt doing karate?
Answer: As with any martial art or self
defense program there is always the possibility of injury. We strive to
ensure that no members, juniors or seniors, conduct themselves with reckless
disregard to fellow karate students. We do require that protective
mouthpiece, hand mitts and shin guards are worn and are mandatory equipment
prior to sparring. If you have any concerns about any possible injury to your
child, please speak with Sensei Nakamura.
Question: I work shifts. What is your class schedule?
Answer: We have classes during the lunch hour
and evenings and weekends to accommodate almost anyone at any time. Click

dates and times.
Question: What is the difference between traditional and
non-traditional karate?
Answer: Our style, Okinawan Goju-Ryu, is a
cultural martial art recognized by the Japanese government as a sacred
traditional style. At no time is any member allowed to change, alter or modify
any technique, kata or bunkai (application) as it is to remain in its truest
form as it has been for over 100 years. Many Western dojos nowadays are
referred to as "McDojos"; a term which identifies that a style is of inferior
quality and/or instruction. To change or alter our system is to disturb and
break our traditional style as taught by our founder Chojun Miyagi Sensei.
